Isn’t it wonderful to actually have a Summer with hot days and amazing diving conditions?
Water temperatures in the bay are currently sitting between 20 and 22 degrees C depending on where you dive, the top end of the bay i.e. Williamstown through to Black Rock are currently sitting at 22 degrees!
A lack of large swell through January provided awesome visibility, but with an increase in daylight hours in Summer, coupled with elevated water temperature comes a proliferation of plankton life as a result of increased amounts of oxygen being released in the water column due to marine plant photosynthesis.
During the month of January, we managed to have a short escape back to Kangaroo Island (SA) to have a little break and re-charge the batteries – whilst there, I managed to get quite a few dives in and reconnect with my happy place enjoying encounters with Leafy Sea dragons, tiny little nudibranchs, prolific fish life and managed to bag a few crays at the same time.
Diving some of the sites I dived brought back some very fond memories of the days where Scuba Culture used to run an annual dive trip to the area, with live-aboard trips along the north coast aboard the historic tall ship “Falie” 20 years ago to our land based trips with a Masterchef twist back in the days where we had a professional Chef come with us, run cooking classes using local produce as he prepared dinner for our diving guests and self catering tours accommodated in stunning holiday homes on the north western coastline.
